Where should a Beginner Get Started?
Having your own website and blogging is one of the most exciting ways to share your knowledge, passions, and interests with the world, because you can make money with it, and have fun doing it!
We are going to tackle 3 aspects to this:
- Where to start, create, host and build your blog.
- How to promote your blog and get visitors for free
- Ways to monetize your blog
Even though we have a 1, 2, 3 sequence here, you have to consider all 3 elements, but begin with the end in mind, creating a Profitable Blog. So, don’t over think it, because the key is to just get started. I cover the basics of how to get started here.
Promoting it can be done in two ways, paid advertising or free advertising. Paid advertising to blogs is costly and unlikely to be profitable as with a blog there are generally too many distractions. The best way to promote the blog is through Search Engine Optimization, or SEO in short, and promoting it through free social media channels. That means that your writing needs to be optimized for SEO purposes.
Monetizing comes in several ways and to name a few popular examples: Affiliate Marketing, AdSense, or possibly selling your own products or services.
In Simple Terms, What is SEO?
How does SEO help you create a Profitable Blog?
Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short, is one of the most misunderstood concepts with regards to acquiring customers for free – through organic search.
By the end of this article, not only will you understand how and why this works, you will also have actionable tips on how to get this done.
What are Search Engines, Really?
A Search Engine is a website that you can search for information, contacts, groups, questions, or anything else. Many people associate “search engine” with Google, but there are in fact a ton of websites that are in fact, search engines. Here are examples of popular search engines: Google, Google Maps, Bing, Yahoo, Craigslist, Quora, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Wikepedia, eBay and Amazon.
I’ll bet you probably never thought of some of these websites as search engines – they are mostly known as “social media apps” or “social media platforms”.
But think about it, if you want to go buy something, you may do any of the following:
- Google it.
- Visit Pinterest and search for that item or inspiration about that item.
- Go to Amazon and search for that item and see price comparisons, reviews, and so on.
- Search eBay and search for that item and see price comparisons, reviews, and so on.
These are SEARCH ENGINES.
How can you get your website to be more visible on these search engines to create that Profitable Blog for beginners?
This is where the “OPTIMIZATION” part comes in. You need to optimize your Blog for the search engine!
Which are the 2 Most Important Elements used to Optimize Your Blog?
There are two main elements that help your Blog get ranked higher on the search engines.
Number 1: Keywords.
Keywords are simply the words that your potential visitors are looking for in the search engine. If someone wants a carpet cleaner to come to their house, they will google “carpet cleaner ” for example or in this case, Profitable Blog for beginners.
You can actually go to “Google Keyword Planner” and type the basic keyword, and actually see statistically how many people search for it. Google Keyword Planner will also give you other suggestions of similar keywords that people are search. That way when you write your copy (the text) on your website, you optimize your website text to match those keywords in a way that it flows. So, when someone searches for those keywords, your website pops up higher on the search engine.
Number 2: Backlinks.
Backlinks topic is going to be reserved to another time because there is a whole strategy on how to get it done, after your article is written with the correct keywords SEO optimization. Be sure to subscribe to this blog to get notified about the free training about BACKLINKS.
What Platform for Your Website?
Where to host your blog can be on an external blogging platform such as Medium, or your own self-hosted platform such as WordPress.
WordPress is our recommendation. You can do Medium in addition to WordPress, but mostly as a means to gain traffic to your main blogging website that is hosted on WordPress.
A third of the world’s internet websites are hosted on WordPress due to its reliability, functionality and ability to create pretty much any type of website.
What domain name to choose and buy?
Before buying a domain name, you need to think about what your niche is going to be, what you are going to blog about.
This requires a bit of thinking and research of keywords.
Ideally, you want to pick a domain that has the keyword of your niche as part of the domain.
Let’s assume you are super passionate about health and fitness. So pick a domain that has the word “health” “fitness” and your name. Ideally, pick a “dot com” domain. Do not have hyphens in the domain. Make it short, easy to spell, and memorable.
So let’s say JoeFitnessHealth.com
Buy the domain and hosting plan. Usually it is a basic plan for 1 website, higher plan for multiple or unlimited websites.
Any of these website domains and hosting providers are good: NameCheap, HostGator, SiteGround, BlueHost. The pricing is similar.

Step by step to installing WordPress and Setting up Your New Website
If you’re starting from scratch with a website hosting package, then generally it’s a simple step-by-step process.
For example, with SiteGround or bluehost, there is a setup Wizard which takes you through the process in about three steps. It might look puzzling at first but it’s really quite simple. You can also find plenty of tuition on Youtube.
When you have installed WordPress, you’ll be able to create a username and password for your website back office. Go to “JoeFitnessHealth.com” (whatever your domain is) and put “/wp-admin on the end of it which will take you to your dashboard where you can create your user name and password.
So, now you need to pick a theme.
Go to the left side and find Themes.. Search for any “Magazine themes” and install it. There are free themes and paid themes. When you’re getting started, free themes are just fine.
Now that you installed the themes, time to install important plugins. Go to the plugins and search for these plugins:
- Rank Math SEO (to help you with Post Optimization)
- Akismet (to prevent spam)
- Smush image optimizer (to automatically reduce image size on the website)
There are thousands of Plugins to use but keep it simple to begin with. Design your theme as you wish with the right colours and layout. You can watch tutorials on how to do it, but take the time to just play around with it and get more familiar. It is going to take a bit to get used to, but persevere, it’s well worth the effort.
How to write your first blog?
When you are more familiar with WordPress, it is time to write your first blog post!
Go to “posts” on the left side of WordPress back office and click “new”. Give your blog a title and start writing. Make the title something that people might search for so that it indicates the topic you’re writing about. You can check on a couple of websites for keywords that have high search volume Keyword Tool or look at what is trending with Google Trends.
Start writing and make sure you include the keywords in the title, the first sentence or paragraph, and here and there mention it naturally through the blog. In this case, our key-phrase is Profitable Blog for beginners. There is no exact rule of thumb, but you can try and mention the keyword once for every 100 words or so. Too much use of the keyword can be considered as “keyword spam” and penalized by Google by not ranking your article, while too little can simply not tell Google enough about your article and therefore not rank you. So the usage of the keyword should be done naturally and not to the detriment of user experience and the flow of the text.
This is SEO, in literally 2 paragraphs. A whole course can be created (and has been created) on this topic alone. So like I said at the beginning, don’t over-complicate this, just get started.
Now for the fun part. How to create this Profitable Blog for beginners and to monetize it!
There are three methods to Monetize your Blog.
(a) AdSense means having Google place advertising on your website. This can only be done once you have a certain amount of visitors. So that’s not the first option to get started with.
(b) Sell your own products or services. If you are a personal trainer, you can give an option in the end to schedule a call with you so you can consult them on your services and sell them your personal training program. If you are using supplements yourself, you can recommend these supplements as a distributor.
(c) Affiliate Marketing: this means selling other people’s products and getting a commission when a sale is made. Since you are talking about health and fitness, perhaps you can place some banner ads on home gym equipment from Amazon on the side of the blog. Or link directly within your blog your recommend home gym equipment. So, when your visitor clicks, goes to Amazon, and buys, you will get a commission.
There are other places online you can find affiliate offers.
The best way is to type the product you are hoping to promote and search for the affiliate products by typing to google “[product name] affiliate program” and finding whether they have an affiliate program. Almost every company these days has one, and they are mostly free to join.
Some notable websites and companies you can find all types of affiliate offers are Amazon.com and clickbank.com.
Word of warning:
With Amazon, sign up using a professional domain email address, i.e. [email protected], not [email protected] Amazon will cancel your accounts after you make a few commissions if you try to sign up with a Gmail. Usually, the feature to create a professional email is part of the hosting plan that you buy with your hosting provider, e.g. SiteGround.)
How do I get Free Traffic to my Blog?
The last thing we will cover is how to get traffic, also known as visitors, to your website. Search Engine Optimization, SEO, is a long-term game. This will take months. So you have to get the word out there!
Post on your Facebook feed and ask all your friends to click the link, visit the blog (Profitable Blog for beginners), read it, comment on it and share it.
Visit LinkedIn, and if it is relevant to the audience there, do the same.
Check out Medium, open an account, and copy and paste that blog post content, and link to the original blog post.
Go to Quora.com and search for questions to do with your topic. Give informative answers and link to your blog.
Promote, promote, promote.
Years ago when blogging first became a thing, people could create a blog, and be on the first page of Google in no time – and make sales!
Today it is a lot harder. A smart way to look at the time you are spending on blogging is that you spend 20% of your time writing the blog, and 80% of your time promoting it.
With better experience and learning of SEO, you can always go back and update old blogs to optimize it for better SEO and get a better chance of ranking.
