What is the Number 1 Best Way to Build a Website in 2020
Hi, I'm Tez
If you’re just starting out and wondering where to find the best information on How to Build a Website, the place to get started is right here.
This Website is aimed at Newcomers so I’ll try to keep it as Tech and Jargon Free as possible.
Let’s Crack On
I have created this Blog with that simple life principle in mind. When it comes to knowledge, we are all somewhere on that scale. There will be those who are above you and those who are below.
Wherever I am on this scale, it gives me a fantastic opportunity to help those below me to show what I know, while at the same time, learn from those above me so that I can pass that back to others.
My Blog is aimed specifically at newcomers and is predominantly about how to build a website, online tools and online business ideas. I will be covering many aspects of this lucrative industry, but I want to keep things easy for newcomers so no techie jargon here, just simple step by step guides and tips.
So, if you would like to join me on this online learning curve, you are most welcome.
To Build a Website is No Longer Rocket Science
Not so many years ago, I can remember building my first website using a software package called Dreamweaver which you may or may not have heard of. It was developed by Macromedia but now acquired by Adobe is still available, and still used, to this day. It has a front end known as “Live View” and a back end which is a code editor. To use it, you write code and view it as you go along. Back then, if you wanted a website, you had to pay someone like me to build it and it wasn’t cheap. But things have changed.
Anyone Can Do It Now
Jump forward to 2020 and anyone can build a website now, with limited or even no coding experience whatsoever. So, with that said, the best way to build a website in 2020 is, to…
Do It Youself
Not sure how to build a website from scratch or where to get started? It has never been easier than right now to produce a professional looking website. Best of all, it can all be done under one roof. There are many host providers out there that make it so simple by including everything you will need.
Step by Step Guide
I’ll take you through the whole process step by step and together, we will build a website.
So the first thing you need to do is create a Domain Name and register it. We’ll start by inventing a fictitious brand, let’s say a dance school and we’ll call it Patty’s Dance School.
What’s in a Domain Name?
Everything! It’s your Brand and needs to portray who or what you represent. This name will stay with you throughout your business. Try to include “your name” or the name of your business or Niche within your Domain Name. Make it extra special by creating a unique and memorable brand identity.
For our fictitious Dance School we’re going to use pattydance.com
How do I register it?
As I said earlier, many Host Providers make it very easy for you to do it all under one roof.
What is a Host Provider?
A Host Provider is an Internet Business which owns space out there somewhere in the clouds. When you sign up to a provider, you are buying space and that space is the place where you will build a website.
You can register your Domain Name with whoever you like and then point it at your Host Provider. But to keep it simple, I recommend you do it with your provider who will in most cases add it as part of their package.
There are numerous host providers to choose from and for the benefit of this guide, I’ll be using SiteGround. Who you use is a personal choice but as I use SiteGround to build my own websites, it makes perfect sense for me to show you how I do mine using them. So, let’s get down to it.
Step - 1
Sign in to SiteGround HERE
Now, let’s click on the middle option “WordPress Hosting” We’re going to use this option so we can build a website using the WordPress Platform.
WordPress is one of the most popular platforms to use to build a website on and is used by 33% of all online Websites.
Step - 2
As we are just building one site, the StartUp Plan is perfect. As time goes by, you may well want to build more than one site. You may even want to build a website for a client one day. When that time comes, you can upgrade to GrowBig or GoGeek.
Step - 3
Check to see if your Domain Name is Available
Here’s that all important bit where you check to see if the name we chose (paddydance.com) is available. Or, if we had already registered it else where, we tick “I already have a Domain”.
So, let’s click proceed and see if we are successful.
Congratulations! Domain pattydance.com is available for registration with your hosting acount!
Step - 4
If your chosen name isn’t available then try variations on it until you find a name that is available. When you’re successful, fill out your personal details and payment details to complete your registration.
Step - 5
When you’ve been through the payment process, you will be directed to this page. Select “Start New Website” then select WordPress.
You will need to create a name and password for your WordPress account. Make sure to take a note of it and keep it safe, you will need it shortly.
WordPress will take two or three minutes to install on your web host. You will receive an email asking you to verify your account. Make sure to do this otherwise, your website will be unavailable after a week or two. That’s it, we now have a website and WordPress up and running.
Help....I'm lost and I don't know where to log in to my WordPress Dashboard.
If you ever loose your way and need to get into your WordPress Dashboard, all you need to do is type in your address bar “your domain name followed by wp-admin” so in our example that will be “pattydance.com/wp-admin“.
Ready to Start Designing Your Dream Website?
Welcome to WordPress!
This is the back end of your website and where all the magic happens. When you open it for the first time, it’s a bit daunting but I will be going through it as we begin to build our site. Now at this point, we can go in one of two directions. We can dive straight in and choose a theme and build a website site around that theme or, we can build a website from scratch. I’ll show you, step by step, how to do it from scratch.
What is a Theme?
First, let me explain what is a Theme. Themes are website templates that have been designed by members of the WordPress community. They allow you to add your own content and make it your own which is great and the easiest option. But, nothing gives more satisfaction than building your own. So, I’m going to show you how to strip a theme down to the bare bones and re-assemble it any which way you like using a page builder called Elementor.
